BUSBY BERKELEY
Black and white publicity photograph of Busby Berkley on the set of the 1933's Roman Scandals with star Eddie Cantor in black face and costume.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To: Richard Lamparski - to me a most/charming man - with a very fine mind/ - one whom it was a genuine pleasure/to meet - to talk with and to know/Very - but very sincerely/Busby Berkeley." B/w, 7¾x9¾. The film director and choreographer is pictured on the set of 1933's Roman Scandals with star Eddie Cantor (not signing) in black face and costume. Berkeley choreographed the movie's dance sequences of the Goldwyn Girls including a 22-year-old dancer named Lucille Ball. Lamparski, to whom this photograph is inscribed, is the author of the "Whatever Became of ?" books. Director and choreographer Busby Berkeley (1895-1976) is famed for his spectacular musical production numbers, featuring scores of chorus girls. Beginning with hit Broadway musicals in the 1920s, Berkeley moved to films with the advent of sound, producing hit musical films like 42nd Street (1933). When not choreographing and directing musical extravaganzas, he proved a skilled director of serious dramas like They Made Me a Criminal (1939). At age 75, he came out of retirement to direct a Broadway revival of No No Nanette. Mounted on a board. Fine condition.
