BUSTER CRABBE
Crabbe handwrote and signed this long note on the back of a 1980
letter from William Nick Howes, a writer at Starlog magazine. In it he
says that he had no problem with autograph hunters - "Quite the contrary -
I'm flattered" - and that one of his most treasured photo was on that
astronaut Dave Scott signed for him.
Autograph note signed "Buster Crabbe". 1 page, 8½x10½. In
full: "(1) I have no pet peeve regarding autograph collectors. Quite the
contrary - I'm flattered - in that I'ce been around for 40 years and people
still remember the old 'Flash' and the 'Old Buck' - One of the treasured photos
that I've received and that has a special place in my den - I quote - TO BUSTER
CRABBE WITH WARM PERSONAL REGARDS AND MANY THANKS FOR LEADING THE WAY, DEC. 29,
1971 - DAVE SCOTT, APPOLLO [sic] 15, GEMINI VIII APPOLLO [sic]
IXWow! And I had to get to the moon - we called it 'MONGO' in
the old days - by rocket ship - and the expertise of 'DOCTOR ZARKOV' the mad
scientist -". This long note was written on the back of a typed letter from
Feb. 23, 1980. William "Nick" Howes, who sent this letter to Crabbe to gather
information on autographs for an article in Starlog magazine. Crabbe
(1908-1983, born Clarence Linden Crabbe in Oakland, California), who won
the Gold Medal in the 400-meter swim at the 1932 Olympic games, went on to star
in over 100 adventure films, many set in outer space (most as Flash Gordon), and
the Wild West (as Billy "the Kid" Carson). In 1933, Crabbe also starred as
Tarzan in the Principal Pictures 16-part serial film. Ironically, in winning
his Olympic medal, Crabbe had broken the record set by MGM's rival Tarzan,
Johnny Weissmuller. Lightly toned and creased. Typed letter shows through
lightly and touches handwriting and signature. Autograph note shows through on
typed side. Otherwise in fine condition.
