BUSTER CRABBE
Crabbe handwrote and signed this letter to a Peggy on the back of a
card used to order photos of him in his various Saturday serial roles. He
apparently sent this because of rising costs, and adds"Hope
you understand as I dislike sending this card".
Autograph letter signed "Buster Crabbe". 2 pages, 3x4 card, 1
sheet, front and verso. On a printed card for ordering 8x10 glossy photos of
Crabbe in his various Saturday Serial roles: Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Tarzan
and Captain Gallant. On signed side, in full: "Dear Peggy - Along with
your request today came 9 other requests for photos. What with costs going up,
folders, print costs etc. is expensive. Hope you understand as I dislike sending
this card- Thanks for your letter. Merry Xmas". On printed side, in full:
"Westerns too! Postage 45¢ - over -". Crabbe (1908-1983, born
Clarence Linden Crabbe in Oakland, California), who won the Gold Medal in the
400-meter swim at the 1932 Olympic games, went on to star in over 100 adventure
films, many set in outer space (most as Flash Gordon), and the Wild West (as
Billy "the Kid" Carson). In 1933, Crabbe also starred as Tarzan in the
Principal Pictures 16-part serial film. Ironically, in winning his Olympic
medal, Crabbe had broken the record set by MGM's rival Tarzan, Johnny
Weissmuller. Lightly toned. Ink transference from printed side
touches handwriting and signature. Handwriting on printed side is smeared in
places but legible. Otherwise in fine condition.
