BUSTER CRABBE
B/w movie still from Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars of Crabbe, as Flash Gordon, confronting the evil Queen Azura in her throne room, signed "All the Best"
Inscribed photograph signed "To/Alice/All the Best/from/Buster Crabbe". B/w, 9¾x8 overall, 9¼x7¼ image, one surface. Movie still picturing Crabbe as Flash Gordon and Beatrice Roberts as Queen Azura in the serial Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars (1938). The 13-part Flash Gordon serial debuted in 1936. In 1938, Flash Gordon's Trip To Mars hit the theaters, delivering 15 episodes of Earth vs. Mars excitement. The third and final 12-part serial, Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, was released in 1940. In the early 1950s, the Flash Gordon serials were televised to a new audience of youngsters just as the space age was being born. Crabbe (1908-1983, born Clarence Linden Crabbe in Oakland, California), who won the Gold Medal in the 400-meter swim at the 1932 Olympic games, went on to star in over 100 adventure films, many set in outer space (most as Flash Gordon), and the Wild West (as Billy "the Kid" Carson). In 1933, Crabbe also starred as Tarzan in the Principal Pictures 16-part serial film. Ironically, in winning his Olympic medal, Crabbe had broken the record set by MGM's rival Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller. Lightly creased, otherwise in fine condition.
