BUSTER CRABBE
This b/w photo Crabbe climbing out of a pool is of him after his
kiddie serial days, when he was Director of Water Sports at the Concord in Lake
Kiamesha, New York in the 1950's. It's signed "Best Wishes" in blue ink
by Crabbe.
Inscribed photograph signed "To/Sam/Best Wishes/Buster Crabbe"
in blue ink. B/w, 7¾x10 overall, 7x8¾ image, one surface. Captioned at
bottom: "Buster Crabbe/Director of Water Sports/The Concord, Kiamesha Lake,
N.Y." This photo was taken long after Crabbe had made his mark in Saturday
serials as Flash Gordon. Crabbe was still fairly busy in showbiz in the
1950s, with a few movies and numerous guest star roles on TV. But he also fell
back on his swimming experience to become Director of Water Sports at the
Concord in Lake Kiamesha, New York, in the Catskills Mountains. Crabbe
(1908-1983, born Clarence Linden Crabbe in Oakland, California), who won
the Gold Medal in the 400-meter swim at the 1932 Olympic games, went on to star
in over 100 adventure films, many set in outer space (most as Flash Gordon), and
the Wild West (as Billy "the Kid" Carson). In 1933, Crabbe also starred as
Tarzan in the Principal Pictures 16-part serial film. Ironically, in winning
his Olympic medal, Crabbe had broken the record set by MGM's rival Tarzan,
Johnny Weissmuller. Lightly toned and creased, otherwise in fine
condition.
