Captioned on verso: " Space-borne Scientist/One of a new breed of space traveler, Payload Specialist Dr. Byron Lichtenberg conducts a fluid physics experiment during Spacelab 1, the maiden mission of a versatile new research laboratory. Lichtenberg, a biomedical engineer with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was the first American from outside NASA's career astronaut corps to fly in space. He was accompanied by Payload Specialist Ulf Merbold, a German physicist representing the European Space Agency. Spacelab is a reusable research facility carried in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle orbiter. The first mission, launched in November 1983 to test the lab and conduct more than 70 experiments, was managed by the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala." Scientist/astronaut Byron Lichtenberg (born in 1948) was selected by NASA in 1978 and made his first flight as a Payload Specialist aboard the STS-9 (Spacelab-1, aboard the shuttle Columbia), November 28-December 8, 1983. He made his second trip into space in the same capacity on STS-45 (ATLAS-1, aboard the shuttle Atlantis), March 24-April 2, 1992. Retiring that year from NASA, Lichtenberg became a pilot for Southwest Airlines in 1995. Pinhead-size spot at upper right background. Fine condition.
