The former Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina pens this letter to Charles B. Deaver
Autograph Letter signed: “C.A. Reynolds” in iron gall ink, 1p, 8½x11. Winston-Salem, N.C.,
1922 May 27. On official Republican National Committee letterhead. To “Mr. Chas B.
Deaver” In full: “I have been overwhelmed with correspondence ever since my election, this
explains my delay I answering your letter, but I am to-day forwarding it to the first Asst P.M.
with the request that an Inspector he sent to investigate this P.O. + that he be requested to call in
for any information you might be able to give him./ With kind regards I am/ Yours truly”. C.A.
Reynolds (b. 1848) was a North Carolina businessman and politician. After attending the
University of North Carolina and Princeton, Reynolds enjoyed moderate success in the
tobacco business. He then became involved in politics, aligning himself with the Republican
Party. In both 1874 and 1888, Reynolds was a justice of the peace. From 1976 to 1882 he
served as deputy collector of internal revenue. Then, from 1897 to 1901, he was
Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina. He was also the postmaster of Winston-Salem in
both 1901 and 1905. Charles B. Deaver, to whom the letter is written, served in the
North Carolina State House of Representatives representing Transylvania County from
1913 to 1916. Multiple vertical and horizontal folds, with one passing through the “A” of
signature. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
