C. AUBREY SMITH
Shown in a typical screen pose as an English lord, he inscribed this photo in person to collector Saul Goodman.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Saul/C. Aubrey Smith". B/w, 8x10. Shown in movie still from Such is the Law (1930). Collector's ink stamp on verso dates signature: June 19, 1935. English stage and film actor [Charles] C. Aubrey Smith (1863-1948) was an internationally renowned cricket star before beginning his acting career. He made his London stage debut in 1895, his silent film premier in 1914. His The Bachelor Father (1928) was his breakthrough role to American audiences, after which he played the quintessential upper-class Englishman in many films. These included Lives of the Bengal Lancers (1935), The Four Feathers and The Sun Never Sets (both 1939) and Scotland Yard Investigator (1945). He was knighted in 1944, honored for his positive portrayal of English characters to foreign audiences. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Lightly creased. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly toned around edges. pin size holes at corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
