Signatures on opposite sides of an album leaf.
Signatures: "Cab Calloway" and, on verso, "Claudio Arrau
", 5½x4½ album leaf. Below Cab Calloway signature is a 2x¼ newspaper
advertisement with his name on it (two surfaces) and below Claudio Arrau 2½x3¼
black and white newspaper photograph and on top of it is 1¾x¼ name out of a
newspaper (three surfaces). Cotton Club orchestra leader CAB CALLOWAY
(1907-1994), one of the premier entertainers in jazz, is best known for
his renditions of "Minnie the Moocher" and "St. James Infirmary Blues" and for
his "Hi di Ho" delivery. Renowned Chilean pianist CLAUDIO
ARRAU (1903-1991) studied with Martin Krause, one of the last pupils of
Franz Liszt, from 1913-1918. One of the most eminent pianists of the 20th
century, Arrau, made his London debut at the age of 17. He had played
extensively all over Europe before making his debut at Carnegie Hall at
the age of 20. Known as a skilled interpreter of music, Arrau gave
concerts around the world until shortly before his death in 1991 at age 88. He
had celebrated his 80th birthday with a tour that included a documentary
filmed in London and his 85th birthday with a world tour that ended with
the "Emperor" Concerto in London. Arrau also made a number of recordings
that included the works of such composers as Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy,
Liszt, Schubert, Schumann and Tchaikovsky. Slightly soiled, lightly shaded at
upper and lower margins. Overall, fine condition.
