The French impressionist painter pens a letter to his wife that mentions Monet
Autograph Letter signed: "C. Pissarro.", 1p, 4½x7. Paris, 1893 May 5. To “My dear wife”. In French, translated in part: "…I just encountered Monet going to his train; I didn't want to go to the Impressionists' dinner. It's too risky. I like being careful better./ On Sunday I'm going to see Georges if time allows it. Mirbeau came this morning. He gave me good news about Georges./ Nothing more to tell you except that I'm letting go of some of the small canvases [2 words difficult to decipher] and that I would really like to go to Eragny./ I embrace you all together". A French painter of the Impressionist school, CamillePissarro (1930-1903) was famed for his landscapes and later, his cityscapes. Early on he was a friend of fellow Impressionists including Monet and Cézanne, and he helped organize the exhibitions of Impressionist work, the first in 1874, which helped popularize the new style. In his later years, which were among his most prolific, Pissarro was bitter over what he called a sellout to public demand by other Impressionist artists, including Monet and Gauguin. This likely resulted in his reluctance to attend the dinner mentioned in this letter. Georges, also mentioned in this letter, was Pissarro's son. At age 21, Georges, one of his eight children, married his 35-year-old cousin, Esther Isaacson. Mirbeau was Octave Mirbeau (1848-1917), a French novelist and drama critic. Over the course of his lifetime, Pissarro painted over 1,600 landscapes and town scenes and nearly 200 prints. Folds, lightly creased. 1-inch separation at mid-horizontal fold touches 2 words, ¼-inch separation at bottom blank margin. Right corner missing. Irregular left edge. Overall, fine condition.
