CANTINFLAS
Agreement to appear in NBC's World's Fair Special for expenses only, as a
goodwill gesture by Mexico, signed with his birth name, Mario
Moreno.
Document signed: "Mario Moreno", 8½x11, 2 pages. New York, N.Y.,
1974 April 16. Agreement with NBC for an appearance on a televised World's
Fair Special, April 22, 1964. Appearing as a "gesture of good will" at the
request of the Republic of Mexico, he will not be paid for his appearance, but
is eligible for trave expense reimbursement not to exceed $5,000. Ink correction
in the hand of an NBC executive places an 18-month time limit on re-broadcast
rights. Mexican comic actor Cantinflas (1911-1993), immensely popular
throughout the Spanish-speaking world, made 50 films in that language and
had one big success on American screens (Around the World in Eighty
Days,1956). Charlie Chaplin called him "the world's greatest
comedian," and his "peladito," an intrepid, struggling Everyman, bore much
resemblance to Chaplin's Little Tramp. Observances of the centenary of his
birth (August 12, 1911) will be held throughout Latin America. Staple and
staples wholes at top left corner. Top left corner creased and torn. Multiple
ink notes (unknown hand) throughout document. Otherwise, fine
condition.
