Printed Art signed in Ink: "David Leestma" , Color 8x10. David C. Leestma was born on May 6, 1949 in Muskegon, Michigan. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, he logged over 3,500 hours of flight time while in the U.S. Navy. A veteran of three space flights, he flew on missions STS-41G Challenger (October 5-13, 1984), STS-28 Columbia (August 8-13, 1989) and STS-45 Atlantis (March 24-April 2, 1992). Leestma's awards include The Distinguished Flying Cross, Defense Superior Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, 1973 Rear Admiral Thurston James Award, NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal. Space shuttle mission STS-28, the 30th orbital flight and the fourth flight of Columbia, was launched the Kennedy Space Center on August 8, 1989, and returned to Edwards Air Force Base on August 13. This Defense Department mission - the fourth DOD-dedicated mission - carried a classified payload, believed to include two communication satellites, and even a classified altitude. The flight also carried a human skull rigged to measure radiation dosages penetrating the cranium during travel in space. Fine condition.
