(one surface). Erik Shilling (1916-2002) was a Flight Leader with the Third
Pursuit Squadron, American Volunteer Group in China ("the Flying Tigers"),
1942-1942. He flew a P-40 fighter on the AVG's first combat mission.
Shilling's flying career, which had begun with the US Army Air Corps, continued
long after World War II, in both civil and military aviation. During the Korean
War, he conducted airdrop espionage missions into China. Fine
