CAPTAIN FREDERICK ANNESLEY MICHAEL WEBSTER
Letter from the author and Loughborough's School of Athletics, Games and Physical Education founder, sending along two quotations from one of his books of verse to be used in a 1926 calendar. Extremely rare!
Typed letter signed: "F.A.M. Wesbter", in black ink, 2 pages, 7x9. April 30, 1925. Birmingham, England. In full: "Dear Sir, I have you letter of the 27th inst. for which I thank you. Herewith I send you, together with postal order for 2s., two quotations from my book verse "Songs Apart", which I should be very pleased to see reproduced in your Booklet Calendar for 1926, a copy of which I should like to purchase in due course. Yours faithfully". Accompanied by typed quotations. British soldier and author Frederick Annesley Michael Webster (1886-1949) published primarily athletic and sci-fi based works for children, often shortening his name to F.A.M. Webster. His earliest book on record was published in 1913, titled Olympian Field Events, and would be the first of 30 plus books written about athletics between 1913 and 1948. His more fantastical books were popular amongst readers as well, including titles like Star Lady (1935), The Curse of the Lion (1922), and The Ivory Talisman (1930). Beyond his writing of athletics, Webster also had a vast interest in the coaching of sports, helping to create the Loughborough's School of Athletics, Games and Physical Education, which in turned created the popular AAA Coaching Scheme. In 2012, he was inducted into the England Athletics Hall of Fame for his contributions to sports and athleticism. Toned. Multiple folds. Large tear present on top left corner of both sheets. Light surface creases, with one large crease on top right corner of both sheets. Multiple folds. Paper clip impression on bottom left margin. Lightly soiled. Corners slightly worn and creased.
