G. LEONARD CHESHIRE. TLS: "Leonard Cheshire, 1p, 8¼x11½. London, 1990 April 24. On his personal letterhead to Robert F. Allen, Auburn, Maine. In full: "Thank you for your letter and for the interest you so kindly express in my wife's work and my own. If this answer is a little delayed it is only because I have needed time to get my hands on a photograph of the two of us. This I enclose [not included] together with a list of the publishers of my books. Practically all of them, I regret to say, are out of print except for the first of all Bomber Pilot. But should you be interested, I could get hold of a hardback copy of The Light of Many Suns, written on the 40th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb. It is partly an historical account of the last thirty days of World War 2 and partly a moral and spiritual reflection on the implications. PS: I am sending, by separate cover, a complimentary copy of New Lives for Old." Accompanied by an unsigned, 1-page bibliography of books written by and about Cheshire, as mentioned in the letter. From June 1940 to July 1944, Wing Commander Leonard Cheshire completed 100 missions as a Royal Air Force bomber pilot. He was awarded his nation's highest award for gallantry, the Victoria Cross, for "sustained bravery" throughout an unprecedented four tours of operations. Cheshire was the British observer on the camera plane accompanying the Bock's Car atomic bomb mission over Nagasaki. Paper clip impression at upper left. Fine condition.
