The Union Army captain pens this letter thanking the recipient for sending him a copy of
his work, Boyhood Recollections and a few other papers
Autograph Letter signed: “Geo. A. Thayer” in iron gall ink, 1p, 4¾x5½. Mt. Auburn,
Cincinnati, 1891 January 28. To “Dear Sir”. In full: “I have read your Boyhood Recollection
with interest and thank you for sending it to me, as well as other papers of yours at former times.
Yours truly”. George A. Thayer (1839-1925) was a Union Army captain who commanded
Company K during the American Civil War. He was first commissioned a lieutenant with
the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry. Then, in 1863, he was promoted to captain of Company K.
He participated in the Georgia Campaign, the battles at Resaca, the Siege of Atlanta, and
Sherman's March to the Sea. After the war, Thayer wrote several books including The
Braintree Soldiers' Memorial (1877) and The Third Critical War of Our National
History (1918). Lightly toned. Sparse staining along bottom edge. Top edge and corners
worn, with slight paper loss. Otherwise, fine condition.
