CAPTAIN HENRIK KURT CARLSEN
The heroic freighter captain signs this handwritten letter to a Mr. Ward
Autograph letter signed: "Kurt Carlsen/+ 'Flying Enterprise'" in blue ink. 7¼x8¼. Woodbridge, New Jersey, February 12, 1952, on personal letterhead to "Dear Mr. Ward:" in full: "Thank you for your kind note of Feb. 2 1952. Wishing you best of luck in the future, I remain Very truly yours". (Henrik) Kurt Carlsen (1914-1989) was a Danish-born sea-captain who became world-famous in January 1952 when he stayed on his sinking freighter, the Flying Enterprise, for 13 days. It is believed that the ship was hit twice by a rogue wave which caused it to capsize and then eventually sink less than 37 miles from safe harbor at Falmouth, Cornwall in England. The incident was reported around the world, and Carlsen received a ticker-tape parade in New York City on January 17, 1952. He was awarded the Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Award, authorized by a special act of Congress. On January 10, 2012, the Captain Carlsen Park in Sewaren, NJ was rededicated to the heroic efforts of the sailor. Toned. Corners rounded. Adhesive stains throughout. Adhesive residue on verso. Normal mailing folds. Newspaper photo of Capt. Carlsen included. Otherwise, fine condition.
