Price: $140.00
ROY STORK
Co-pilot of Crew #10 on Jimmy Doolittle's raid
Commemorative Envelope signed: "J. R. Stork Co-pilot Crew
#10/Tokyo Raid 4-18-'42", 6½x3¾. Special US Air Force cancellation from
Arlington, Virginia, January 11, 1997, 32-cent US flag stamp affixed. Led by
James "Jimmy" Doolittle, 80 men on 16 B-25 bombers took off from the carrier USS
Hornet on April 18, 1942. The raid, which marked the first time fully
loaded bombers took off from an aircraft carrier, was in retaliation for Japan's
surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. "Doolittle's Raiders" hit targets in Tokyo,
Yokohama and other cities and scored a huge victory for U.S. morale at a time
when Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Lt. J. Roydon
STORK was co-pilot on plane #10, the last of the planes to take off
headed for Tokyo, successfully bombing the Japan Special Steel Company and other
targets. It was the plane most seriously damaged by enemy fire, but reached
the China coast. Stork and other crew members bailed out, received local
Chinese assistance, and eventually reached India, where they conducted missions
into 1943. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
