JAMES F. RIGG. Typed Letter signed: "James F. Rigg", ¼ p,
8½x11. East Greenwich, Rhode Island, 1990 September 10. To William
Stanhope, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Typed reply at bottom of a typed letter from
Stanhope inquiring about Rigg's combat experience. In full: "To fully
satisfy your curiousity [sic] I suggest you read FIVE DOWN & GLORY by
Gene Guerny and McCAMPBELL'S HEROES by Edwin P. Hoyt. You will find the second
one the more interesting one. Sincerely." Highly decorated U.S. Navy
pilot Rigg shot down a confirmed 11 Japanese aircraft, including a Japanese ace,
during World War II. Commanding a squadron of Hellcat fighters off the carrier
Essex, he shot down 5 in one day over Cebu Island, in the Philippines. Asked
by a magazine 50 years later how much he remembered about these air battles, he
replied, "I still see them every night." Lightly creased. Vertical fold runs
between "F." and "R" of signature. Overall, fine condition.
