MIKE SMITH
Pilot of the ill-fated Challenger, his first space mission sends an autograph letter as to why he likes being an astronaut.
Rare Autograph Letter Signed:
"Mike Smith", 1p, 8x11. No place, no date. To Venessa. Penned on patriotic stationery sent to Smith by Venessa. In full: "Thank you for your letter. I enjoy being an astronaut for several reasons. First it gives me the opportunity to work with a really great group of people -- other astronauts. Second the space program offers a chance for me to participate in the exploration of our last frontier -- Space. I also travel around the country to talk to folks about the program. The American people have a lot of enthusiasm about the program so it is enjoyable to discuss it with them. As you know the Space Station will be flying in the early 1990's. It will allow us to spend long amounts of time in space. By then maybe you will be able to take a trip into space whenever you like. Best of luck." Smith was selected to be the pilot of his first flight into space aboard the Challenger. On January 28, 1986, Smith and his six colleagues were killed when the Challenger 51-L space shuttle exploded 73 seconds after liftoff. Pinpoint-size stains at upper left blank margin, else fine condition.
