Autograph Letter Signed: "Cap. Nemo"in iron gall ink. 10x8. Three pages. Fully Translated in English: "Habana October 4, 1898. Mr. Agent Luis. My dear friend: I have the greatest pleasure in acknowledging receipt of your two letters, in one of which you enclosed a copy of a primer dedicated by the author to the Cuban Army: I am very grateful to you and promise that I shall use it to teach my son to read, who will have fortune to be able to read 'Cuba Free and Independent' without fear or censure. The day after tomorrow, the Commissioners of the 5th and 6th Army Corps will be leaving for Santa Cruz by way of Batabanó. By all reports, our friends who left us at different stages in the war are now returning from the front: what horrible days those were, which are now forever in the past. You do not have to feel bad for writing a lot to me; it is a great pleasure for me to receive word from you, and I hope that you will continue to write me whenever you find the time. We can suppose that "Captain Nemo" conceived his codename from Jules Verne's classic Twenty Thousand League's Under the Sea (1870). This letter was sent in the last months of the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898), when Spain had already sued the U.S. for peace, the U.S. had accepted, and they were soon to attend the peace talks which culminated in the Treaty of Paris (1898).
