ROY "BUTCH" VORIS
The highly decorated WWII flying ace who was the first leader of the Blue Angels signs his name and "1st Blue" on this card
Signature: "Butch Voris/1st Blue/Fighter Ace (8 kills)" in blue ink. 6x4. Roy "Butch" Voris (1919-2005) was World War II flying ace, an aviator in the United States Navy and founder of the Navy's flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels. During World War II he fought in several battles including the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, the Battle of Tarawa and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Over his more than two decades of military service, Voris received three Distinguished Flying Crosses, eleven Air Medals, three Presidential Unit Citations and a Purple Heart and dozens of other medals. The Blue Angels are a Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron formed in 1946 to boost Navy morale and gather public support for a larger defense budget. Voris was the original officer in charge and flight leader and his team thrilled spectators with aerial maneuvers on two tours (1946-1947) and (1952-1953). The Blue Angels are now the oldest flying aerobatic team and perform more than seventy shows in the United States every year. In 2000 he was inducted into the International Air Show Hall of Fame and in 2002 into the Navy Aviation Hall of Fame. Corners slightly rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
