W. HENRY O'CONNELL The Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who was the Archbishop of Boston signed this card in black ink Signature: "W. Card. O'Connell/Abp. Boston" in black ink. 4¾x3½ card adhered to a 5½x3½ piece of cardstock. Cardinal William Henry O'Connell (1859-1944) was first ordained into the priesthood in 1884. He was named the Archbishop of Boston in 1907, eventually becoming one of the longest serving American Cardinals in history, behind only James Gibbons and William Wakefield Baum. He strengthened the Archdiocese of Boston through decades of growth in churches, parishes, and ordained priests. In 1915, O'Connell published a memoir in the form of autobiographical letters he supposedly wrote during his first 10 years as Archbishop. However, these letters were later found to be falsely dated, actually written over a short period of time. He was appointed a Cardinal in 1911. Edges lightly scalloped. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
