CARL BALLANTINE
B/w photo of comedian Carl Ballantine in a hat, coat and sweater and with an umbrella under one arm, signed "With my best wishes" in 1986
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To -/Jim Rogge/With my best/wishes -/Carl Ballantine/86 [in circle]". B/w, 7¾x10 overall, 7¼x9¼ image, one surface. In the year he signed this photograph, Ballantine appeared in one feature film, The Best of Times, and the made-for-TV movie, Blackie's Magic, and he guest starred on an episode of the sitcom, Night Court. Actor and magician Ballantine (1922-2009), who is best known for his role as Torpedoman Lester Gruber in the TV series, McHale's Navy (1962-1966), and the 1964 film of the same name, was an inspiring magician whose tricks roused only laughter from audiences. Capitalizing on his ineptitude, he showed up as "The Great Ballantine" on such shows as The Ed Sullivan Show and The Steve Allen Show. Ballantine has also appeared in such feature films as The Shakiest Gun in the West (1968), The World's Greatest Lover (1977) and Mr. Saturday Night (1992), and he has made a number of made-for-TV movies. Ballantine, who is sometimes billed as Carl Ballentine, has also guest starred on several TV shows. Slightly creased at blank margins and corners. Minor surface striations (not evident head on). Fine condition.
