CARL C. RAFN
The Danish historian and translator pens a letter to philologist George P. Marsh
Autograph Letter signed: “Mafn” in iron gall ink, 1p, integral leaf folds in half to measure
8½x10½. Copenhagen, Denmark, December 9, 1842. Letter written in untranslated Danish
to George P. Marsh. Carl Christian Rafn (1795-1864) was a Danish historian who worked
primarily on translating Old Norse literature. He was a proponent of proper recognition of
the Viking's prominent role in early explorations of North America. Rafn earned his law
degree from the University of Copenhagen and went on to teach at the Army Cadet Academy
in Copenhagen until he was eventually able to devote more time to his studies. Rafn produced
many scholarly works of literature including a Danish translation of Norse mythic and
romantic sagas (1829-1830) as well as his widely-read American Antiquities (1837), which
proposed that America was discovered by Norsemen. American diplomat and philologist
George Perkins Marsh (1801-1882) is considered by many to by America's first
environmentalist. Fluent in half a dozen European languages, his specialty was Icelandic.
Marsh wrote many articles for the Universal Cyclopaedia and was a prolific contributor to
The Nation, a long-running periodical focused on left-leaning politics and culture. Several
vertical and horizontal folds. Gently worn and creased. Holes and tearing at center of right
edge (when leaf is oriented to read letter). Toned. Lower right-hand corner folded over.
Otherwise, fine condition.
