College shown smiling with his hands on his hips. A rare signature!
Inscribed photograph signed: "Yours for a quick recovery/Carl H.
Doehling", in blue ink. B/w with sepia tone, 8x10. Carl Herman Doehling
(1896-1985) served as the head coach of the Ripon College Redmen
(Wisconsin) from 1924-1955. In his 30 plus years with the Redmen he led
the team to 15 conference championships, 6 achieved at The Big Four. His
career began in 1922 when made coach of the Central High School team in
Minnesota. Winning back to back football and track championships in 1923 and
1924, Doehling received a line from Ripon College to become their new head
coach. As coach he went on a massive program overhaul, implanting a stellar
intramural program and intercollegiate sports. One of Doehling's greatest
victories was a 12-0 win over the unbeatable University of Chicago. Ripon's
first ever victory against the Big Ten Conference opponent, it is regarded one
of the biggest upsets in the history of collegiate sports. Lightly bowed.
