Knight. Anaheim, California: Carl Karcher Enterprises, 1981. Hardcover with dust
jacket. Carl Nicholas Karcher (1917-2008) opened a hot dog stand on borrowed
money in 1941, and parlayed that into a restaurant chain of over 3,000 stores in
13 countries. CKE Enterprises, the corporation he founded, runs the
Carl's Jr. and Hardee's fast food restaurant chains. Karcher was removed as
CEO by his board during a merger dispute in 1993, but returned as chairman
emeritus in 1994. A self-made fast food mogul in the mold of Ray Kroc
(McDonald's) and Dave Thomas (Wendy's), Karcher made major innovations,
including salad bars and self-serve drink stations, which are now common in
the industry. Karcher was a major financial contributor to both philanthropic
and politically conservative causes. Karcher has inscribed this book to
James Nagamatsu and his wife Helma. James Nagamatsu is a past President
of the Orange County Symphony Association and a member of the board of the
Performing Arts Center. Fine condition.
