CARL LAEMMLE, SR.
One year after selling his interest in Universal Pictures, he thanks fellow
movie mogul Daryl Zanuck for arranging a visit to the Twentieth Century-Fox
studios.
Typed Letter signed: "Carl Laemmle", 1 page, 8½x11. Beverly Hills,
California, 1937 February 16. On personal letterhead to Darryl Zanuck, 20th
Century-Fox Studios, Westwood Hills, California. In full: "I want to
take this opportunity to thank you for the many courtesies you extended to my
dear friend, Mrs. Francesca Gluckstein of London, who visited your studio
yesterday. She was delighted with everyone she met and everything she saw. Those
who helped to show her around were most pleasant and aided immeasurably to make
her visit a never-to-be-forgotten one. She has asked me particularly to express
her thanks to your able and charming secretary, Miss Berman, who was most
cordial towards her. Again I want to express my appreciation for this courtesy
and with best personal regards I remain Sincerely". CARL LAEMMLE, SR.(1867-1939), a German immigrant who started in Chicago building
nickelodeons, busted the film "Trust" system by independently joining with
others. He created the star system and founded Universal Pictures in
1912. Circa 1915, Laemmle built his Universal City on 230 acres in north Los
Angeles, which became the first municipality devoted to the manufacture of
films. Over the years he was known for producing quality films and stars.
Laemmle, who had taken his company public on the NYSE in 1925, sold his
interest to a syndicate for $5.5 million in 1936. Fold creases at "l" of Carl.
Lightly soiled. File holes at upper margin. Staple holes at upper left corner.
Faint pencil notes at lower left. Otherwise, fine condition.
