CARL LAEMMLE, SR.
The founder of Universal Pictures lavishly praises a fan's letter.
Typed Letter signed: "Carl Laemmle" as President of Universal
Pictures, 1 page, 8½x11. New York, N.Y., 1928 March 9. On letterhead
of Universal Pictures Corp. to Miss Celia Brown, Nashua, New Hampshire. In
full: "Your letter of February 27th was very welcome and most reassuring.
What better news could I hope to receive than that your theatre manager has
promised to book all of our new product. I am sure it must have pleased him also
to receive your inquiry and to know that, in contracting for our new pictures,
he is winning the approval and thanks of some of his best patrons. And now
that everyone is happy and I know that you are going to be in good screen
company in the coming months, I can breathe a sigh of relief. But it is
important to me to know just how the 1928 Universals are being received in
Nashua. Will you keep me informed? I don't wish to tax your pen and patience to
the extent of asking you to comment upon every picture, but perhaps you will
feel inclined to criticize groups of them as they come along. You won't be
hurting my feelings one bit, either, if you find it necessary to make an
unfavorable comment now and then. Your viewpoint will be fresher and your
perspective much better than that of people who are so close to the picture
business. Have you friends or acquaintances in Nashua whose names we might
add to our mailing list? I should welcome the opportunity of sending them the
latest issue of the Universal Picture News, if you would care to give us a list.
Again thank you heartily for your splendid interest and cooperation. Cordially
yours". CARL LAEMMLE, SR.(1867-1939), a German immigrant who started
in Chicago building nickelodeons, busted the film "Trust" system by
independently joining with others. He created the star system and founded
Universal Pictures in 1912. Circa 1915, Laemmle built his Universal City on
230 acres in north Los Angeles, which became the first municipality devoted to
the manufacture of films. Over the years he was known for producing quality
films and stars. Readers can form their own opinion as to whether Laemmle's
lavish praise of this fan's film acumen is delivered with tongue in cheek. Folds
touch "ar" of signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
