CARL LEWIS
Signed First Day Cover celebrating the 1980 Olympic Games (which the US team
didn't attend)
First Day Cover signed: "Carl Lewis," 6½x3½, honoring the
1980 Summer Olympics. 31-cent U.S. stamp affixed, postmarked
Colorado Springs, CO, November 1, 1979, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Carl
Lewis (b. 1961) won nine Olympic Gold Medals (and one Silver) in Track
& Field: 1984 (100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter relay, long jump),
1988 (100-meter, long jump), 1992 (400-meter relay, long jump) and
1996 (long jump). The indoor long jump record he set in 1984 still
stands. Sports Illustrated named him Olympian of the Century. An all-around
athlete, Lewis was drafted by the NBA Chicago Bulls (the same year they picked
Michael Jordan) and by the NFL Dallas Cowboys, but never played in those
leagues. The 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow were boycotted by the United
States because the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Slightly soiled.
Otherwise, fine condition.
