CARL R. EKLUND. Philatelic Envelope signed: "Carl R. Eklund", 6½x3½. Commemorative cover bearing 3-cent embossed G. Washington stamp and 4-cent Forest Conservation stamp, postmarked Arlington, Va., November 4, 1958. Addressed to Harry Gustkey, Detroit. Rubber stamped cachet: "International/Geophysical Year/Wilkes/Station/U.S. National Committee/National Academy of Sciences" with a map of Antarctica. Carl R. Eklund accompanied the Byrd expedition to Antarctic in 1939 as an ornithologist. While on the Byrd expedition, Eklund made one of history's major Antarctic dogsled treks, traveling 1,284 miles in 84 days, charting 350 miles of coastline. Islands in the King George VI Sound were named the Eklund Islands. During WWII, he served with the Arctic-Desert-Tropic branch of the Air Force, with tours of duty in Greenland and Labrador. In the International Geophysical Year, 1957-1958, Eklund served for 18 months in the Antarctic at Wilkes Station. Slightly soiled. Fine condition.
