CARL ROSA
The opera impresario, who popularized English language operas in Great Britain and the United States, signs his name in black ink
Printed card signed in ink: "Carl Rosa" in black ink. 5x2¾ printed card. Chicago, Illinois. October 26, 1869. Carl Rosa (1842-1889) was a German musical impresario, best known for his English opera company, the Carl Rosa Opera Company, which popularized opera in Great Britain and America by performing standard repertoire in English, as well as new operas by English composers. A child prodigy, Rosa toured in Scotland between the ages of 12 and 16, studied at the Conservatorium at Leipzig in Saxony, as well as in Paris. While in England in 1866 he appeared both as a soloist and a conductor, as well as married the famed soprano Euphrosyne Parepa, with whom he formed the Parepa Rosa English Opera Company, which toured the United States for three seasons, with Parepa as its star and Rosa as the conductor. In 1873 they changed the name to the Carl Rosa Opera Company, based mostly in London, which would go on to perform more than 150 different operas over the years. Rosa died suddenly at the age of 47, but left a legacy which demonstrated that English opera could be an artistic and financial success. Corers rounded. Toned. Small ink stains throughout. Toned stains on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
