The Pulitzer Prize-winning author signs this typed letter in response
to an autograph request
Typed letter signed: "Captain Van Doren" in black ink. 6x5
clipping affixed to 8½x11 sheet. New York, November 28, 1945. In full: "Dear
Captain Ward: Please believe that I earnestly wish for you a steady and full
recovery from your illness; and that I hope you will have every success in the
collection of autographs you are making; and that I consider myself honored by
your request for mine along with the others. Sincerely yours". Carl Van
Doren (1885-1950), a literary critic and professor at Columbia
University, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1939 for his biography of Benjamin
Franklin. Carl was the brother of fellow Columbia University professor and
Pulitzer Prize winner Mark Van Doren and the uncle of Charles Van Doren, briefly
famous from the rigged quiz show Twenty One. Corners slightly rounded.
Newspaper article affixed to front. Lightly creased from adhesive. Otherwise,
fine condition.
