The Pulitzer Prize winner signs a letter, accepting an invitation to
dinner and a meeting
Typed letter signed: "Carl Van Doren", in black ink, 1 page,
5½x8½. December 4, 1923. New York City, New York. The Century Magazine. In
full: "My dear Miss Lord: Mrs. Van Doren and I can come to dinner and to
the Shop Talk meeting on December 21, and we shall be delighted to do it. We
happen neither of us to have met Miss West. Thank you for giving us this
pleasant opportunity. Very sincerely yours". Carl Van Doren
(1885-1950), a literary critic and professor at Columbia University, won
a Pulitzer Prize in 1939 for his biography of Benjamin Franklin. Carl was
the brother of fellow Columbia University professor and Pulitzer Prize winner
Mark Van Doren and the uncle of Charles Van Doren, briefly famous from the
rigged quiz show Twenty One. Normal mailing folds. Pencil note (unknown
hand) on verso. Fine condition.
