CARLO "DON CARLO" GAMBINO A check written by the Gambino family patriarch and crime boss to an associate Partly Printed Check signed: "Carlo Gambino" and "George Schiller", 8¼x3. New York, 1963 December 5. Drawn on the Chase Manhattan account of S.G.S. Associates, 141 East 44th Street, New York City. Payable to Henry H. Saltzstein for $400. Endorsed on verso: "Henry H. Saltzstein" and "Catherine Viconti". S.G.S. Associates was a labor relations company that Gambino formed with Schiller, a Russian-born businessman, and Saltzstein, a convicted burglar. Gambino's name appeared on the door of the office suite at 141 East 44th Street in Manhattan. The business, one of the few financed by Gambino and registered in his name, flourished until 1965, when constant attention from the FBI and other law enforcement agencies resulted in its closure. Carlo "Don Carlo" Gambino (1902-1976), also known as "The Godfather", was the primary model for Mario Puzo's novel, famously adapted into film by Francis Ford Coppola. Gambino was the long-time leader of the Gambino crime family and a key figure in the power of organized crime nationwide. He died of natural causes in 1976 at the age of 74, a testament to his ability to avoid detection and conviction of any crimes he or his family committed. Light bank stamp touches the top of the "o" in Gambino and the "ler" in Schiller's signature. Circular bank cancellations touch writing. Fine condition.
