CARLO MARIA GIULINI
Letter from the Italian conductor speaking of his recent move to the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, saying he looks forward to "many happy years in California"
Typed letter signed: "C M Guilini", in black ink, 8½x11. November 9, 1978. Los Angeles, California. In full: "Dear Mr. Beam, Thank you so much for your kind letter regarding our broadcast on October 29. I cannot tell you what joy it is giving me to work with such very fine musicians, and I think this is the beginning of a very happy collaboration. I have been deeply moved by the warmth of my reception in Los Angeles, and look forward to many happy years in California. Sincerely". Conductor Carlo Maria Guilini (1914-2005) began his interest in music as a child, learning to play viola at the age of five. His viola playing would later be used to supplement his family's income during the Great Depression, playing for the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. In 1940, Giulini won a conducting competition which allowed him to conduct the St. Cecilia orchestra, but was drafted into the Italian Army for World War II before his debut concert. When the war ended, he was able to resume his conducting, and by 1955 engaged himself in a 23 year association with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also served as a music director of the Vienna Symphony and as principal conductor and Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn and creased. Small tear in center of left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
