CARLOS BAKER
The Ivy League scholar, author of the well-regarded Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story (1969), send letter discussing works by Robert Frost, signs name in blue ink
Autograph letter signed: "Carlos Baker" in blue ink. 1 page, 7¼x10½. Written on personal letterhead. Princeton, New Jersey. February 28, 1974. Addressed to a Mrs. Fox, in full: "Robert Frost used to say that the world as we know it will always be mixed up - at sixes and sevens - and I agree with him. At the same time, in his poem, "Our Hold on The Planet", he points out that, in sprit of war and cataclysm, our hold on the planet earth has steadily increased and that the score is about 51-49 at halftime - and it's always halftime. I agree there, too. Best wishes". Carlos Baker (1909-1987) was an American writer, biographer, and former Woodrow Wilson Professor of Literature at Princeton University. He has authored several novels and books of poetry, as well as various literary criticisms and essays, but his is best known for his scholarly biography of Ernest Hemingway titled Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story (1969), and went on to write other notable biographies including one of Percy Bysshe Shelley. He would later serve as mentor to Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer A. Scott Berg. Normal mailing folds. Slightly toned. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
