The Boston Red Sox, who swept the Oakland A's (winners of the last three Series) for the AL pennant, were distinct underdogs against the Cincinnati Reds "Big Red Machine". The Reds, featuring Hall of Famers Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and Tony Perez, and all-time career hit leader Pete Rose, are on everyone's short list of the greatest teams of all time. In six of the 7 games, the winning team came from behind. Three games - including Game Seven - were decided in the 9th inning, and two more, including the 12-inning Game Six, in extra innings. The Reds prevailed in seven, and Red Sox fans, who had not thrilled to a World Series victory since 1918, would have to wait another 30 years for vindication, but Fisk's game-winning clout remains one of baseball's great moments. LUIS TIANT won two games in the Series, and also started Game Six. BERNIE CARBO's pinch-hit 3-run homer in the eighth inning of Game Six, one of his two in the Series, kept the Sox alive. DWIGHT EVANS made a spectacular catch in the eleventh inning, depriving Joe Morgan of a game-winning homer. FRED LYNN, the AL Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in 1975, scored 3 runs and drove in 5. One of the great "what ifs" for Red Sox fans is that Hall of Famer JIM RICE, an 8-time All-Star, was injured and unavailable for the Series. Colorful Red Sox southpaw BILL LEE was nicknamed "Spaceman" for his zany antics, which explains his comment on the picture. RICK WISE was the winning pitcher in Game 6, as he has noted here. RICO PETROCELLI had played for the Sox in another fine World Series, the team's 1967 loss in 7 Games to a powerhouse St Louis Cardinals team. There are many photos of this great baseball moment, but most show Fisk from the front. Here he is pictured as the Sox players saw him from the dugout, making their comments on the moment all the more memorable. Fine condition.
