CARLYLE BLACKWELL
Handwritten letter from the actor to entertainment reporter Louis Sobol in thanks for his recent column, writing that he hopes someone will be able to give him the same kindness
Autograph letter signed: "Sincerely yours/Carlyle Blackwell", in black ink, 1 page, 7¼x10½. September 11. In part: "My dear Louis, "Your a sweetheart if there there ever was one". I haven't words to express my appreciation and gratitude for your generosity in giving me your Saturday's column. It leaves me speechless - I only trust that someone will be able to return the grand courtesy you have extended to me". Carlyle Blackwell (1884-1955) appeared in over 80 films, all but two of them silent, beginning with Uncle Tom's Cabin (1910). He moved to England in 1922, appearing that year as the first film Bulldog Drummond. He played Sherlock Holmes in a German silent adaptation of The Hound of the Baskerville (1929). He also directed several films. After 1930 he focused his career on live theatre. Entertainment reporter Louis Sobol (1895-1986) had a column "New York Cavalcade", in the Hearst newspapers. Light surface creases. Lightly toned on outer margins. Faint fingerprint stains on bottom margin. Normal mailing folds. Small ink smear near bottom of letter on 'best wishes', but clearly legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
