CARNIVAL IN COSTA RICA MOVIE CAST: DICK HAYMES and CELESTE
HOLM

Photograph signed: "Dick Haymes", "Thank you from/UNICEF/Celeste
Holm". B/w, 10x8. Captioned movie still from Carnival in Costa Rica
(1947). DICK HAYMES (1918-1980), born in Argentina, was a very popular
big band singer of the 1940s and solo pop vocalist through the mid- 1950s. He
sang with the bands of Harry James, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey, and was
renowned for his mellow renditions of pop standards like "Come Rain or
Come Shine" and "It Might as Well Be Spring." He appeared in a few films
(State Fair, Four Jills and a Jeep, and the film shown here), and
might have been remained at the top had it not been for personal problems:
alcohol, women (six stormy marriages, including one to Rita Hayworth), and
citizenship problems. (Columbia Pictures mogul Harry Cohn tried to get him
deported.) In 1943, Rodgers and Hammerstein cast CELESTE HOLM (1917-2012)
as soubrette Ado Annie in Oklahoma!; both the production itself and
Annie's show-stopping song "I Cain't Say No" signaled her future stardom. She
was cast by her studio, 20th Century-Fox, in the role of the love-starved
fashion editor in the prestige feature Gentlemen's Agreement (1947),
for which she won an Academy Award. The important role of Bette Davis'
understanding friend in another Oscar-winner, All About Eve (1950), has
immortalized Holm amongst the film cultists. Always choosy about her roles, she
remained active in the 1980s and 1990s whenever a good part struck her fancy.
Holm has long been active in support of the UN Children's Emergency Fund
(UNICEF). Lightly creased. Worn at corners and edges. Ink note (unknown hand) on
verso (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
