CAROL DEMPSTER - INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH SIGNED TWICE - HFSID 296377
Price: $360.00
CAROL DEMPSTER
The actress is shown wearing a straw hat and period attire in this
sepia photograph.
Photograph inscribed and signed twice: "Best wishes
to/Tommy McCabe/Ever/Carol Dempster" in white ink, and "Best Wishes to
Tommy McCabe Carol Dempster" in blue ink at right margin. Sepia,
8x10. Former dancer Carol Dempster (1901-1991) starred in several of
the later films of director D. W. Griffith, with whom she had a romantic
relationship. She retired from film after marrying a banker in 1929. Critics
in her time treated her harshly, and earlier Griffith stars Lillian Gish and
Mae Marsh disliked her, but some of her films - especially Isn't Life
Wonderful (1924) and The Sorrows of Satan (1926) are well regarded
now. Worn at edges. White ink inscription smudged. Ink note (unknown hand)
at bottom right margin. Ink notes (unknown hand) and stamps on verso (no show
through). Otherwise, fine condition.
