In letter form from Selznick International Pictures, Inc. to Miss Carole Lombard, c/o Myron Selznick & Company, Inc., Beverly Hills. In full: "Will you please confirm by your signature in the space provided below the mutual agreement between us to postpone from August 3rd, 1938, to August 18th, 1938, the starting date of the photoplay in which you are about to appear for us pursuant to the terms of your agreement of employment with us dated May 31, 1938. Notwithstanding such postponement, it is understood, of course, that we have started you on payroll as of July 5, 1938, and we will pay you the installments of compensation contemplated by your contract for a period of ten (10) consecutive weeks thereafter; it being further understood and agreed that commencing ten (10) weeks after August 18, 1938, we will pay you pro rata of the compensation contemplated by such agreement of employment in accordance with its terms and provisions. Except as herein expressly provided, said agreement is not amended or modified and as hereby amended and modified is ratified and confirmed." Also signed: "Daniel T. O'Shea" as Secretary for Selznick International Pictures, Inc. This letter likely refers to Lombard's 1939 film, Made For Each Other, in which she starred as Jane Mason opposite James Stewart (David O. Selznick was the film's producer). That year, she also starred in another film, In Name Only. In the year of this document, Lombard appeared as Kay Winters in Fools For Scandal, her only starring film for Warner Bros. The film was based on Nancy Hamilton's stage play. One of Hollywood's most talented stars (and a sophisticated comedienne as well), Carole Lombard (1908-1942), born Alice Jane Peters, began her rise to stardom opposite John Barrymore in Twentieth Century(1934) and charmed the nation with her roles in My Man Godfrey(Academy Award nomination, 1936), Nothing Sacred (1937) and To Be or Not to Be(1942). Married to William Powell from 1931 to 1933, she wed screen idol Clark Gable in 1939. Lombard was at the height of her popularity when she was killed in a plane crash while returning home from selling U.S. War Bonds. Lawyer DANIEL T. O'SHEA was Selznick's top executive officer and right hand man. He was a key figure in various Selznick enterprises in the 1930s and 1940s, and rose to prominence in the Society of Independent Motion Picture Producers. This contract became null and void when Selznick International Pictures was dissolved in 1940. Also included is a two page unsigned autobiography by McDaniel about the filming of Gone With the Wind. Lightly creased, not at signature. ¼-inch tears at upper blank margin and blank right edge, which is nicked. Otherwise, fine condition.
