CAROLE SHELLEY
While appearing in the Broadway production The Norman Conquests, she writes to a fellow actress that she has already gotten over a "bad" incident.
Autograph Letter signed: "Carole S. x", 2 pages (front and verso), 6¼x4½. No place, 1976 May 22. On personal note card to "my dearest Laura". In full: "Your compassion, love and support last Tuesday and Wednesday will live with me always. The 'bad' will fade away very quickly - in fact I feel so good already - it's making me feel guilty!! I hope we really have a chance to work together - you are such a super actress - in a class by yourself. With all my love". English actress Carole Shelley (1939-2018) won a Tony (as Best Actress in a Play) for The Elephant Man (1979), and has been nominated for three other Tonys: Absurd Person Singular (1975), Stepping Out (1987) and most recently Billy Elliot (2009). She created the role of Madame Morrible in Wicked (2003). On film, she starred as Aunt Clara in Bewitched (2005), and has been a voice actress in several Disney animations. Her allusion in this letter to an unhappy incident is unclear. When she wrote it, she was appearing on Broadway in The Norman Conquests (December 1975 - June 1975). There was an understudy named Laura (Stuart) in the small cast, and the incident might merit further research by a theatre buff. Lightly toned with corners lightly creased. Fine condition.
