separate sheets. Los Angeles, California, original date of contract was 1958 August 7, pages
on this copy dated as late as 1958 October 14; the page on which Jones has signed is dated
1958 October 10. In letter form to Jones, c/o William Morris Agency, Inc., Beverly Hills,
California regarding her employment in the film, Hole in the Head. The contract was to
commence not earlier than November 1, 1958 nor later than December 1, 1958. Jones was to
be paid $5,000 per week for each week of the term. Points covered in the contract include Pro
Rate Compensation, Payment of Compensation, Minimum Compensation, Deductions,
Wardrobe, Additional Services, Retakes, Performance, Place of Performance (Los Angeles,
California and Miami Beach, Florida), Conduct, Guild Membership, Rights, Insurance,
Remedies, Contingencies, Legality, Assignment, Definitions and Credit (Jones was to be
billed as a star or co-star in fourth position). Also signed by representatives of Trafalgar
Productions, Inc. and Frank Capra Productions, Inc. A Hole in the Head, directed by Frank
Capra, was released in 1959. Jones stole the show as Shirl, the bongo-playing girlfriend of
Tony Manetta (Frank Sinatra). True to the terms of this contract, Jones was billed
fourth, behind Sinatra, Edward G. Robinson and Eleanor Parker. The film, which also
featured Thelma Ritter and Keenan Wynn, won an Academy Award for Best Song. In the
year she signed this contract, Jones appeared in King Creole and Marjorie Morningstar.
Stage, screen and television actress Carolyn Jones (1919-1983) is best known for her role as
macabre matriarch Morticia Addams on The Addams Family, which was televised on ABC
from 1964-1966. Jones, who had received an Academy Award nomination for Best
Supporting Actress in 1957 for her five-minute appearance in The Bachelor Party, had made
her film debut in 1952's The Turning Point. Her other film credits include The Big Heat
(1953), The Seven Year Itch (1955), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) and How the
West Was Won (1962). Jones, who also appeared in a number of made-for-TV movies,
including an Addams Family reunion film, died of cancer in 1983 at the age of 54. On thin
paper, which is lightly creased. Signature page is nicked at lower blank edge. Staple holes and 2
file holes at upper blank margins. Fine condition.
