Francisco, California, 1979 June 4. On Bechtel Corporation letterhead to Mr.
George R. Sanders, General Manager, KWJJ Broadcasting Company, Enka, North
Carolina. In full: "Thank you for your May 28 letter. In response to
your request, I am enclosing an autographed photograph for your collection."
Photograph not present. Caspar W. Weinberger (1917-2006), a former
California legislator and Aide to then-Governor Ronald Reagan,
came to Washington in 1970 and quickly established himself as a capable
administrator and influential policymaker under Presidents Nixon and Ford. His
posts included Chairmanship of the Federal Trade Commission (1970),
Director of the Office of Management and Budget (1972-1973) and
Secretary of Health Education and Welfare (1973-1975). After a period in
the private sector as Vice President of Bechtel (1975-1980), he became
Secretary of Defense (1981-1987) under President Reagan, strongly
supporting the military buildup of that decade. Although he had long opposed
arms sales to Iran, Weinberger was indicted in the "Iran-Contra" affair
but pardoned by President Bush (1990). Slightly creased. Light paper clip
impression at upper left blank corner. Fine condition.
