A rare signature from the Littlefield Ballet Company founder, signing with "Best wishes"
Autograph sentiment signed: "Souvenir of/Fox Theatre/Best wishes/Catherine Littlefield", in blue ink, 4¾x4½. Catherine Littlefield (1905-1951) was a choreographer and dancer, descending from the Littlefield dance family, and was one of the founders of the Littlefield Ballet Company (eventually the Philadelphia Ballet Company). Studying under her mother Caroline Littlefield, who she and other dancers affectionately called "Momma", Catherine went on to form the Littlefield Dance Company with her mother. The company became the first American ballet company to tour Europe, and was also the first company to produce a three act production of Sleeping Beauty, employing 100 dancers. The company was very successful for several years, but eventually had to disband in 1941 due to the majority of their male dancers leaving to join the war effort. After the ballet company disbanded, Littlefield continued to contribute her skills and efforts to theatre and dance until succumbing to liver cancer in 1951. Left edge frayed and worn. Lightly soiled. Top margin toned. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
