C. DAY LEWIS. Typed Letter signed: "C. Day Lewis", 1 p,
6x4½. Musbury, Axminster (England), 1947 June 27. To "Dear Moore".
In full: "I wish I could. To witness Basil Wright wielding the bat
would alone be a rich reward, but alas I have to be judging a verso-speaking
competition in London that day. Yours sincerely." Cecil Day Lewis
(1904-1972) was an Irish-born poet closely associated with W. H. Auden. A
member of the Communist Party from 1935-1938, Day emphasized social themes in
his early poetry. After rejecting communism, his themes became more personal and
metaphysical. He also wrote twenty mystery novels, filled with literary
allusions, under the name of Nicholas Blake. Lewis was Britain's Poet
Laureate (1967-1972). He is the father of Oscar-winning actor Daniel
Day-Lewis. Foxed. Lightly creased. Two ¼-inch tears at lower right edge.
Pencil note (unknown hand) in upper right.
