CECIL H. UNDERWOOD
Card signed after his first term as Governor of West Virginia
Signature:"Cecil H. Underwood/Governor, West Virginia/1957-1961". 3½x2 card. Underwood (1922-2008, born in Tyler County, West Virginia) was twice governor of West Virginia from 1957 to 1961 and from 1997 to 2001. A Republican, Underwood was mayor of Charleston and West Virginia's youngest governor when he was elected in 1956. (It was revealed a week before the election that his opponent, Congressman Robert Mollohan, had received gifts and money from a coal operator who mined state land on a boys reformatory that Mollohan operated) At the time, he was considered a rising star in the Republican party. During the 1960s, he was temporary chairman of the Republican National Convention and even briefly considered as vice-president to Richard Nixon in 1960. But three subsequent gubernatorial defeats tarnished his star. This made his 1996 gubernatorial run something of a surprise. It was an even bigger surprise when he won against Democrat Charlotte Pritt, who had tepid support at best from her own Democrats. Underwood also served as president of Bethany College from 1973 to 1975. Lightly toned. Signature is lightly smeared, but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
