CECILE JOHNSON
Typed Letter signed (1977), explaining why she won't market her Christmas
cards
Typed Letter signed: "Cecile". 1 page, 8 ½ x 11. New York City,
1977 December 22. On her personal letterhead with Des Artistes to "Dear
Rush". In full: "Thank you for your Christmas note. While it would
have been nice to have you as my rep you could hardly have retired on it.
Christmas cards in full color are so expensive to reproduce that I have been
doing it for my ski area friends and Thayer as a personal favor. I would have to
charge $1.00 a piece for the cards in order to make money on them and then
no-one could afford to send them. So I just have the pleasure of knowing they
will be used all over the country. You perhaps know that I am in the American
Artists group cards, which is another cup of tea because, of course, we get a
percentage since the work is done in such great quantities. Health and happiness
- have a good year./cc: Thayer Tutt". American painter Cecile Ryden
Johnson (b. 1957) , who works in watercolors, oils and acrylics, is known
for her New England and Caribbean landscapes, and especially for her winter
sports scenes. She produced the official lithographs for the Lake Placid
Winter Olympics. Her Christmas card featuring skaters at Rockefeller
Center was an especially popular card for American Artists. Thayer Tutt
(1912-1989), to whom Johnson sent a copy of this letter, was an executive of
several ice hockey leagues and organizations. Lightly stained. Normal mailing
folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
