An unsigned envelope hand addressed by the 19th century author,
written circa 1886
Autograph envelope unsigned, 5½x3. Circa 1886. Addressed to Mrs. H.G.
Allen. Celia Thaxter (1835-1894) was an American author and socialite,
residing in Maine for most of her life. The daughter of hotel owner Thomas
Laighton, Thaxter became the hostess to her father's hotel,
entertaining a long list of New England authors and artists incluing Ralph
Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Sarah Orne
Jewett, and Childe Hassam. Her life at her father's hotel on Appledore
Island inspired many of her writings, most of which appeared in The
Atlantic Monthly. Some of her best known poems include "Landlocked",
"The Great White Owl", and "The Kingfisher". She was also present during the
murders on Smuttynose Island, which inspired her essay "A Memorable
Murder". Bottom left corner torn, with bottom right corner thinned. Toned.
Soiled across front. Small cuts on top margin. Corners slightly worn and
creased. Soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
